Description

Situated to the west of Saint-Quentin, on the Route Départementale 1029 leading to Amiens, this necropolis was built in 1923 to bring together the graves of numerous small military cemeteries in the town, as well as others from the surrounding area.
Rebuilt twice in 1934 and 1935, it contains 4,947 bodies, including 1,319 in ossuaries.
It also contains the bodies of two Romanians and one hundred and seventeen Russians, as well as those of two hundred and seven Frenchmen killed in the Second World War, whose bodies were brought here from various parts of the Aisne in 1954.
Saint-Quentin was occupied by the Germans from August 28, 1914 to October 2, 1918. The headquarters of the 2nd Army was located here until February 1917, the day before the town was entrenched behind the Hindenburg Line and became a German stronghold.
Plundered and bombarded, Saint-Quentin played an important role again in March 1918: it was from here that the first German offensive of the spring began, driving the Kaiser's troops to the gates of Amiens.
