Tombés au cours de la Grande Guerre et notamment lors de la seconde Bataille de la Marne en 1918, plus de 2000 soldats reposent à la nécropole nationale des Chesneaux. Edifiée en 1919 à l’emplacement d’un cimetière militaire américain provisoire et étendue sur une superficie de 9480 m², la nécropole témoigne de la reconnaissance nationale aux combattants de la liberté, morts au champ d’honneur. Le linceul, gisant de marbre blanc réalisé par l’enfant de Château-Thierry Achille Jacopin, fut offert à la ville en 1916 et installé dans la nécropole.

More than 2,000 soldiers who fell during the Great War, and in particular during the second Battle of the Marne in 1918, are buried at the Chesneaux National Necropolis. Built in 1919 on the site of a temporary American military cemetery and covering an area of 9480 m², the necropolis bears witness to the national recognition of freedom fighters who died in the field of honor. The shroud, a white marble recumbent made by Achille Jacopin, a child of Château-Thierry, was donated to the town in 1916 and installed in the necropolis.
