EGLISE SAINT-ALBIN – La Salvetat-sur-Agout

Au cœur de La Salvetat, l’église paroissiale Saint-Albain impressionne par ses dimensions, héritage d’une époque où le village comptait près de 5 000 habitants au XIXᵉ siècle, contre un peu plus de 1 100 aujourd’hui. L’édifice actuel, élevé en 1868, a remplacé une première église du XVIIᵉ siècle devenue trop exiguë face à la croissance démographique. En pénétrant à l’intérieur, on découvre un chœur majestueux porté par quatre piliers de marbre et flanqué de bénitiers, tous rescapés de l’ancienne église. À l’entrée, le tympan représentant le martyre de Saint Étienne, sculpté en 1951 par Antonio Alos, attire le regard des visiteurs. Un petit détour s’impose vers la chapelle au fond à gauche, qui abrite une copie de Notre-Dame d’Entraygues, liée à une légende locale. Autre détail émouvant : le Christ en bois fixé au pilier droit du chœur, provenant de la chapelle des Pénitents Blancs. À ses pieds, un crâne rappelle le symbole de la pénitence.

In the heart of La Salvetat, the parish church of Saint-Albain impresses with its size, a legacy of a time when the village counted almost 5,000 inhabitants in the 19th century, compared with just over 1,100 today. The current building, erected in 1868, replaced the original 17th-century church, which had become too small to accommodate the growing population. Stepping inside, one discovers a majestic choir supported by four marble pillars and flanked by holy-water fonts, all remnants of the former church. At the entrance, the tympanum depicting the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, sculpted in 1951 by Antonio Alos, catches the eye of visitors. A short detour to the chapel on the far left is in order, housing a copy of Notre-Dame d?Entraygues, linked to a local legend. Another touching detail is the wooden Christ attached to the right-hand pillar of the choir, taken from the chapel of the Pénitents Blancs. At his feet, a skull recalls the symbol of penitence.

El edificio actual, erigido en 1868, sustituyó a la iglesia original del siglo XVII, que se había quedado pequeña para acoger a la creciente población. Al entrar, se descubre un majestuoso coro sostenido por cuatro pilares de mármol y flanqueado por pilas de agua bendita, vestigios de la antigua iglesia. En la entrada, llama la atención el tímpano que representa el martirio de San Esteban, esculpido en 1951 por Antonio Alos. Hay que desviarse brevemente a la capilla del extremo izquierdo, que alberga una copia de Notre-Dame d'Entraygues, vinculada a una leyenda local. Otro detalle conmovedor es el Cristo de madera fijado al pilar derecho del coro, procedente de la capilla de los Penitentes Blancos. A sus pies hay una calavera, símbolo de penitencia.
