Description

Artists invite us to experience a second reality, a reality parallel to the everyday world. Michelle Winckler?s second reality is called poetry. Sculptures that would otherwise go unnoticed become objects of fascination: their verticals lift us up, their spirals carry us along, their curves, volutes and circles transmit their movement to us. Wood, mineral, crystal and metal take shape in our imagination, and all become objects of poetic meditation. The titles tell us so: "Emportée par le vent", "Échouages", "Au jardin des songes", "La déferlante"… far from elucidating the enigma of each piece in its abstraction, the titles instead open up the imagination for a new and always dreamlike interpretation. But transgression doesn't just apply to the material. It also affects scale, in a subtle ambiguity of reading that turns a piece of debris into a monumental form, a shard into a fragment that becomes legible in the immense. Fire has been there, as has the ice evoked by crystal, having frozen the moment in its most fleeting form. Michelle Winckler plays with time, with scale, with materials in their unusual encounter, erosion seen as the writing of a new poetry. She plays with light, subtly guided along rings or curves that are sometimes barely suggested, or along an imperious vertical when two unusual materials come together. How far can such verticals rise? How far can the erosion of wood, crystal, glass or metal go? How far can we build up such transparencies? Daniel Lacomme painter. My work is born of observation of matter, volume, texture, color, cracks, odor and the traces of tools left by man. This sensitive approach guides me along two possible paths, either by chance, moving forward without any precise idea, at the whim of the wood and its form, or by imposing my will based on sketches and models made beforehand. This is followed by a long road to simplicity, made up of full and empty spaces, roughness and softness. Accidents play an important role in my work, sometimes unwelcome, often precious when they open up new creative paths. For some time now, I have been looking for complementarity, adding new elements to wood, such as crystal, or rusted metal, a trace of the passing of time, a duty to remember where the natural rubs shoulders with the artificial in a search for harmony, until the union of forms and materials is, in my eyes, self-evident.
