At the age of 82, as curious and inventive as ever, she composed her own version of Cinderella, a little comic opera for piano and voice, originally written to be performed in a salon. Today, this rare and mischievous work takes on a whole new dimension: under the baton of conductor Bianca Chillemi and in a whimsical staging by David Lescot, Cendrillon leaves the salon for the stage. The score is enriched by a small instrumental ensemble, the dialogues are treated musically, and the magic happens. While the main motifs of Perrault?s tale – the jealous sisters, the fairy godmother, the ball, the lost slipper – are still present, Pauline Viardot?s version reveals a subtle strangeness, a bittersweet poetry that inspired David Lescot: "Here, Cinderella takes in the damned of the earth.
