Il risultato è un album rilevante e attuale, sperimentale e senza tempo, una raccolta generosa e commovente che parla di amore, resilienza e riconciliazione, da parte di un artista che apprezza soprattutto la bellezza e il potere della connessione umana. Harding cerca conforto e pace attraverso la musica da sempre. Nato a Saginaw, nel Michigan, da un padre ingegnere meccanico e da una madre cantante gospel, Harding ha trascorso gran parte della sua infanzia tra il nord e il sud degli Stati Uniti, prima che la sua famiglia si trasferisse ad Atlanta. Imparò a cantare e a suonare la batteria in chiesa con la madre, che gli fece conoscere Mahalia Jackson e Mavis Staples. Ma è stata la collezione di cassette hip-hop di sua sorella a spingerlo a intraprendere una carriera musicale e a ispirarlo a scrivere e rappare. Con la scena musicale di Atlanta in piena espansione, Harding inizia a lavorare per promuovere gli artisti della leggendaria etichetta LaFace e presto si ritrova in studio e in tournée come corista di alcune delle più grandi star della città. Nel 2014 Harding ha registrato il suo album di debutto Soul Power senza grandi aspettative, ma si è rivelato un vero successo, soprattutto in Europa. Uncut lo ha definito "un approccio sicuro a un soul elegante alimentato da trombe e con un tocco di muscoli garage", mentre Mojo lo ha definito "davvero speciale". Tre anni dopo, Face Your Fear segna la sua svolta negli Stati Uniti, spingendo ancora più in là i confini del suo sound. Prodotto da Cohen e dal superproduttore Danger Mouse, l'album gli è valso tour con Jack White e Lenny Kravitz, festival come Newport Folk, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits e quasi 60 milioni di ascolti su Spotify. Ma proprio quando pensava di aver finito, la pandemia COVID-19 ha sconvolto tutti i suoi piani. Con il mondo in crisi e l'industria musicale in pausa, Harding è tornato al tavolo da disegno. Alcune canzoni hanno assunto un nuovo significato alla luce degli eventi, mentre altre sono state rielaborate. Ha scritto diverse nuove canzoni e, sebbene nessuna si riferisca direttamente al 2020, l'influenza di quel periodo affiora sullo sfondo. L'onestà e la vulnerabilità sono al centro di If Words Were Flowers, che si apre con una potente title track. "Portano con sé il potere / Così fieri e belli" Come gran parte dell'album, questa è una canzone che affonda le sue radici nell'amore, ma non necessariamente nel romanticismo. Certo, Harding esplora anche le relazioni intime (l'orecchiabile Can't Hide It celebra la certezza e l'impegno, la tenera With You parla del potere trasformativo della compagnia e la psichedelica Explore evoca nuove esperienze con un partner), ma soprattutto canta dei legami più ampi che ci legano come fratelli e sorelle umani. L'accorata I Won't Let You Down promette un sostegno incondizionato; l'hip-hop Hopeful invita a rimanere forti e ad andare avanti insieme; e brani più sommessi come Where Is The Love e It?s A Wonder cercano un terreno comune e un significato in un mondo a volte privo di empatia.
