Description

The 1930s saw the formation of French jazz orchestras and musicians, who set out to defend the new music coming out of the United States and to make it their own in their own national context. Influenced by the great English and American white music-hall orchestras, jazz was marketed and disseminated on a large scale via the radio and the countless concerts by the bands of Ray VENTURA, Fred ADISON and then Raymond LEGRAND, all of whom helped transform French chanson into swing. Manon FABRE is a doctoral student in musicology and cultural history at the University of Paris-Saclay. Her thesis examines the aesthetic itinerary of the first attraction orchestras between 1928 and 1941, exploring the interactions between jazz and French chanson.
