Concert D'Jazz Nevers Festival : Vincent Courtois – Colin Vallon duo Sonata – 10-11-2025 – Nevers

Fidèle au Festival depuis le début des années 90, Vincent Courtois ne cesse de creuser son sillon singulier, où classique, jazz et musique improvisée viennent se fondre dans un imaginaire riche de ses références littéraires et cinématographiques. Dernière étape en date de ce parcours : sa rencontre avec le pianiste suisse Colin Vallon, connu notamment pour son art du trio à la fois cinématique et contemplatif, dont les fastes se déploient au fil de quatre albums parus sur le label ECM. Avant même de les entendre en duo, on devine déjà ce qui les rassemble : un goût immodéré de l’interaction, un sens consommé de la dramaturgie, avec le lyrisme pour horizon et le silence comme meilleur allié. Leur premier album en commun s’intitule A Simple Fall : faut-il traduire « un simple automne », ou bien plutôt quelque chose comme « chute libre » ? A Festival loyalist since the early 90s, Vincent Courtois continues to carve out his own unique path, where classical, jazz and improvised music merge in an imagination rich in literary and cinematographic references. The latest step on this path was his meeting with Swiss pianist Colin Vallon, known in particular for his cinematic and contemplative trio playing, the splendour of which can be heard on four albums released on the ECM label. Even before hearing them as a duo, it's clear what unites them: an immoderate taste for interaction, a consummate sense of drama, with lyricism as their horizon and silence as their best ally. Their first album together is called A Simple Fall: should it be translated as "a simple autumn", or something more like "free fall"? Vincent Courtois, der dem Festival seit Anfang der 90er Jahre die Treue hält, gräbt unaufhörlich seine eigene Furche, in der Klassik, Jazz und improvisierte Musik in einer Vorstellungswelt verschmelzen, die reich an literarischen und filmischen Referenzen ist. Der Schweizer Pianist Colin Vallon ist vor allem für seine kinematische und kontemplative Triokunst bekannt, die er auf vier Alben des Labels ECM zum Ausdruck bringt. Schon bevor man sie als Duo hört, ahnt man, was sie verbindet: eine unbändige Lust an der Interaktion, ein ausgeprägter Sinn für Dramaturgie, mit Lyrik als Horizont und der Stille als bestem Verbündeten. Ihr erstes gemeinsames Album trägt den Titel A Simple Fall, was so viel heißt wie "ein einfacher Herbst" oder eher "freier Fall"? Vincent Courtois is al sinds het begin van de jaren '90 trouw aan het Festival en blijft zijn eigen unieke pad uitstippelen, waar klassiek, jazz en geïmproviseerde muziek samensmelten in een verbeelding die rijk is aan literaire en cinematografische referenties. De laatste stap op deze weg was zijn ontmoeting met de Zwitserse pianist Colin Vallon, vooral bekend om zijn filmische en contemplatieve triospel, waarvan de pracht te horen is op vier albums die zijn uitgebracht op het label ECM. Zelfs voordat je ze als duo hebt gehoord, kun je al horen wat hen samenbrengt: een mateloze smaak voor interactie, een uitmuntend gevoel voor drama, met lyriek als horizon en stilte als hun beste bondgenoot. Hun eerste album samen heet A Simple Fall: moet het vertaald worden als "een eenvoudige herfst", of meer als "vrije val"? El último paso en este camino ha sido su encuentro con el pianista suizo Colin Vallon, conocido sobre todo por su interpretación cinematográfica y contemplativa en trío, cuyo esplendor puede escucharse en cuatro álbumes publicados en el sello ECM. Incluso antes de escucharlos como dúo, ya se adivina lo que les une: un gusto desmesurado por la interacción, un sentido consumado del drama, con el lirismo como horizonte y el silencio como mejor aliado. L'ultima tappa di questo percorso è stato l'incontro con il pianista svizzero Colin Vallon, noto in particolare per il suo trio cinematografico e contemplativo, il cui splendore si può ascoltare in quattro album pubblicati dall'etichetta ECM. Anche prima di sentirli in duo, si capisce già cosa li unisce: un gusto smodato per l'interazione, un senso consumato del dramma, con il lirismo come orizzonte e il silenzio come miglior alleato.
