Ce groupe réunit quatre musiciens accomplis autour de la belle voix de Mairéad Ni Mhaonaigh qui s’exprime en anglais et en gaélique, langue qui conserve nombre de (d’innombrables) trésors du patrimoine traditionnel chanté. Ce groupe tisse un répertoire de balades, de jigs et de reels animés, hérité du Donegal, comté encore sauvage, situé au nord-ouest de l’Irlande, ainsi que du nord du pays, régions dont la plupart des membres du groupe sont originaires. Altan demeure aujourd’hui « l’étalon or de la musique traditionnelle irlandaise » – l’Irish Echo.

ounded in the late 80s in the wake of the Clancy Brothers, Chieftains and other Dubliners, Altan has released a dozen albums and visited many countries around the world. The group brings together four accomplished musicians around the beautiful voice of Mairéad Ni Mhaonaigh, who expresses herself in English and Gaelic, a language that preserves many (countless) treasures of the traditional sung heritage. The group weaves a repertoire of lively ballads, jigs and reels, inherited from the wild county of Donegal in north-west Ireland, as well as from the north of the country, where most of the band members hail from. Today, Altan remains "the gold standard of traditional Irish music", according to the Irish Echo.
