Oils on canvas play an important role in major artistic venues such as museums, châteaux and churches, and are also highly prized by collectors. At the Musée de la Loire, the inventory lists 159 easel paintings in particular, representing 7.5% of the collections. When they need care, these works of art are entrusted to a specialist professional with scientific and technical skills, particularly in the fields of chemistry and materials technology. Qualified and authorised to work on public collections, the conservator-restorer is trained in heritage conservation and acts in accordance with a precise code of ethics.
Their tasks are numerous and clearly standardised. They begin with a meticulous examination of the work, a kind of auscultation that is essential for establishing its state of deterioration and proposing the most appropriate treatment. After the essential discussions with the owner about the choices to be made, the actual treatment phases begin in the workshop, always taking care to respect both the physical integrity and the aesthetic significance of the work.
