Ruines romaines d'Alauna – Valognes

This remarkable city flourished for 350 years, from the end of the 1st century BC to the end of the 3rd century AD. At its peak, it covered an area of 45 hectares and was home to 3 to 4,000 inhabitants. The main ancient roads served Alauna, making it a central city in the North Cotentin region. The town appeared at the center of a traffic hub linked by roads and paths to Cherbourg, Coutances as far as Rennes, Portbail, the Val de Saire (Fermanville, Barfleur and Saint-Vaast-La-Hougue) and Rouen. As the city expanded, large mansions (domus), the theater and thermal baths were built on the outskirts of the urban center. It had 5 vertical staircases, a diameter of 66m and a capacity of 3,700 spectators. Listed as a historic monument since 1862, the terms are the only ancient remains preserved in elevation in the whole of Normandy. The 1225m² building was symmetrical, with 6 cold rooms (frigidarium) and 4 warm rooms (caldarium) or tepidarium. The even slope of the land allowed the hot rooms to be built below. The warm pool consisted of a 7.30m-diameter basin heated by 12 brick furnaces. The terms had a hygienic function, but not only that: they were also places where people could meet and socialize, chat, discuss business or just relax.
