Porte du Thuron – Saint-Macaire

Le faubourg du Thuron, « fontaine » en vieux gascon, s’est édifié sur la pente reliant la place du marché au premier port sur la Garonne. Lorsqu’il a été rattaché à l’enceinte fortifiée, la présence même du port a nécessité un supplément de précautions défensives avec l’adjonction d’une barbacane. Le duc d’Anjou dresse le siège de la ville en 1377 en accédant au pied des remparts par le port. Le chroniqueur Froissart note qu’il y a à Saint-Macaire « beau logis et grand ».

The Thuron suburb, a "fountain" in old Gascony, was built on the slope linking the market square to the first port on the Garonne. When it was attached to the fortified enclosure, the very presence of the port required additional defensive precautions with the addition of a barbican. The Duke of Anjou laid siege to the town in 1377 by accessing the foot of the ramparts through the port. The chronicler Froissart notes that there is in Saint-Macaire "beautiful home and large".
