Description

This stronghold is part of the belt of 19 forts built by the Prussians around Strasbourg between 1872 and 1882, to protect the city in the event of war. Fort Werder (renamed Fort Uhrich after the First World War) was originally designed to support a siege. In wartime, it could accommodate up to 700 men in some 100 rooms. Today, it is the only moated fort in the belt of forts still open to the public. To get there, all you have to do is follow the Forts trail, on foot or by bike. The historic moat that once encircled the building has been restored to enhance its natural surroundings. The fort cannot be visited, but it can be toured along the paths that run alongside the moat and ramparts. The pathway allows visitors to contemplate the landscape and discover this unique heritage thanks to informative panels that retrace the history of the site.
NB: no access possible inside the fort.
