Description

On the site of a former fountain, a monument erected in 1894 by public subscription honors the memory of Barisians Pierre and Ernest Michaux, inventors and propagators of the pedal cycle. The monument also marks the entrance to the Bourg district.
A chubby child representing the genius of the bicycle, standing in front of a velocipede, praises the Michaux father and son?s invention of the pedal in 1861, enabling the cycle to evolve from the draisienne to the velocipede. Despite the apocryphal inscription, the advent of the moped in the twentieth century owes nothing to these Barisiens, former carriage repairmen converted to the trade in this new means of locomotion. Designed by Édouard Houssin, the bronze sculpture was cast in 1942 and restored shortly after the Second World War. The memorial replaces a fountain built in 1756 to serve the needs of the district. Although the water came from the Popey springs, it was declared unsafe for consumption and banned in 1781. A pump fed by a well, however, ensured that water was available to residents until the 19th century. This curved corner building features a classical structure with Ionic pilasters, a shell niche, a Rococo cartouche and a pediment,
rocaille cartouche and triangular pediment. Opening onto Rue du Bourg, the monument is built on the site of an ancient bastion that protected one of the three entrances to this district in the Middle Ages. A drawbridge crossed the moat, which was supplied with water by a diversion of the Canal des Usines. The square tower on top belonged to the city?s fortified enclosure. Like all the city's fortifications, this defensive complex disappeared on the orders of Louis XIV in 1670.

18. und 19. Jahrhundert
