Description

This megalithic monument is one of two menhirs still visible in the département, along with the one at Vitry-lès-Nogent. It measures 6.56 m in height, with a width varying from 2.24 m at ground level to 1.50 m at the top.
Situated near the ancient Roman road between Wassy and Naix (in the Meuse department), it features an inscription that has raised questions among those who have sought to understand its meaning.
Two meanings have been accepted: either "General Viromaros set the frontier of the Leuque state here", or the more likely "Here lies the body of Viromaros, son of Istatilos".
It was listed as a historic monument in 1883.
The monument has twice been damaged. One was man-made, in 1782, when it fell and broke after the intervention of an "archaeologist". The other was climatic: it was struck by lightning in 1986. On both occasions, in 1845 (only) and 1987, the Haute-Borne menhir was restored.
Deutsch
