Au pied du Grand Ballon, Goldbach remonte au moins à 1135 et la fondation d'un couvent d'Augustins à proximité du hameau. Au nord de Goldbach se trouve le hameau d'Altenbach, lieu présumé de naissance de la célèbre Madame Sans-Gêne, femme du maréchal Lefebvre. A l'écart de la grande circulation, ces localités sont néanmoins le lieu de passage privilégié des touristes qui se rendent sur les crêtes vosgiennes et montent au Grand Ballon. Le village de Goldbach apparaît en 1469 sous la dénomination de Goltbach et celui d'Altenbach en 1335 sous sa dénomination actuelle. Les deux villages ont appartenu à l'abbaye de Murbach jusqu'à la Révolution. Ils ont fusionné le 1er janvier 1973. L'église de Goldbach est dédiée à Saint-Laurent.

At the foot of the Grand Ballon, Goldbach dates back to at least 1135, when an Augustinian convent was founded near the hamlet. North of Goldbach is the hamlet of Altenbach, presumed birthplace of Madame Sans-Gêne, wife of Marshal Lefebvre. Away from the main traffic routes, these villages are nonetheless a popular stopping-off point for tourists on their way to the Vosges crests and the Grand Ballon. The village of Goldbach appeared in 1469 under the name Goltbach, and that of Altenbach in 1335 under its current name. Both villages belonged to the abbey of Murbach until the French Revolution. They merged on January 1, 1973. The Goldbach church is dedicated to Saint-Laurent.

Goldbach am Fuße des Grand Ballon geht mindestens auf das Jahr 1135 und die Gründung eines Augustinerklosters in der Nähe des Weilers zurück. Abseits des großen Verkehrs sind diese Ortschaften dennoch ein beliebter Durchgangsort für Touristen, die sich auf den Vogesenkamm begeben und zum Grand Ballon hinaufsteigen. Das Dorf Goldbach erscheint 1469 unter der Bezeichnung Goltbach und das Dorf Altenbach 1335 unter seiner heutigen Bezeichnung. Die beiden Dörfer gehörten bis zur Revolution zur Abtei Murbach. Am 1. Januar 1973 wurden sie zusammengelegt. Die Kirche von Goldbach ist dem Heiligen Laurentius geweiht.
