Eglise Saint-Martin – Lacs

D’emblée, elle conquiert le visiteur : mais il ne faudrait pas se laisser abuser par son air de paysanne endimanchée. Son chevet certes rustique avec son décor de billettes et ses modillons s’enorgueillit de remplois gallo-romains (Apollon et Mercure, de part et d’autre de la baie d’axe, Vénus au sud), attestant que le christianisme n’avait pas détruit tout vestige de la culture antique imprégnée par les représentations païennes, mais qu’il s’y était souvent substitué. Le clocher, postérieur, qui donne son élan à l’édifice, est couvert lui aussi de bardeaux.

The church captures the visitor's interest from the start, but one should not be deceived by its demeanour of a peasant woman in her Sunday best. Its certainly rustic apse with its decor of billets and its modillions contain Gallo-Roman figurines (Apollo and Mercury, on both sides of the axis bay, Venus to the south), attesting that Christianity had not destroyed every vestige of ancient culture imprinted with pagan representations, but that it was often substituted by them. The bell tower, dating from later, gives a stimulus to the building and is also covered with shingles.

Sie erobert den Besucher auf Anhieb, aber man sollte sich nicht von ihrer bäuerlichen Ausstrahlung täuschen lassen.
