Eglise Saint-Laurent de Falaise – Falaise

De la première construction remontant à la fin du 11ème siècle, il reste la nef à contreforts plats, aux murs en moellons de schistes disposés en arêtes de poisson. La façade et le portail sont également d’époque romane. Une partie du chœur à chevet plat est de la fin du 12ème siècle. La reine Mathilde, très attachée à la ville natale de son illustre mari Guillaume le Conquérant, a fait d’importantes donations à Saint-Laurent.

Legend has it that coming back from game forests, young Duke Robert spotted a young woman washing clothes in the Ante Valley fountain at the foot of the castle. It was Arlette, daughter of Foubert, a fur merchant in Falaise. Robert fell in love with her and made her come to the castle with him. She agreed, but insisted that she enter on horseback by the main gate. During their first night together, Arlette was woken by a dream: a tree, springing from her stomach, cast its shadow over the whole of Normandy and “Great England”. She told Robert, who saw it as a good omen. In fact, a few months after, her son was born whom Robert called William, nicknamed the Bastard.

Von dem ersten Bau aus dem späten 11. Jahrhundert ist das Kirchenschiff mit flachen Strebepfeilern und Mauern aus fischgrätenartig angeordneten Schieferbruchsteinen erhalten geblieben. Die Fassade und das Portal stammen ebenfalls aus der romanischen Epoche. Ein Teil des Chors mit flachem Kopfende stammt aus dem späten 12. Königin Mathilde, die der Geburtsstadt ihres berühmten Ehemannes Wilhelm des Eroberers sehr zugetan war, machte Saint-Laurent bedeutende Spenden.

Van de eerste bouw uit het einde van de 11e eeuw resteert het schip met zijn platte steunberen en muren van leisteenpuin met visgraten. De gevel en het portaal zijn ook uit de Romaanse periode. Een deel van het koor met een plat chevet dateert uit het einde van de 12e eeuw.
