Château d'Avignon

Au cœur de la Camargue, le château tire son nom de celui d'un des propriétaires du domaine : François Joseph d'Avignon d'Arlatan, qui y bâti au XVIIIème siècle le 1er édifice. Mais l'heure de gloire est l'époque où le riche négociant marseillais Louis Noilly Prat l'achète et le transforme en pavillon de chasse. Mais l'intérêt de la conception tient surtout au rêve un peu fou qu'il a réalisé ici. Il a intégré pour son plus grand confort et pour les nécessités des travaux agricoles, tout ce que l'époque connaissait de plus à la pointe de la technique : éclairage électrique, chauffage central, eau courante chaude et froide, salles de bains équipées… le palais des modernités des années 1890. A l'intérieur se trouvent des œuvres d'art : peintures, céramiques, tapisseries, tout est encore en place : du linge jusqu'au pot de chambre, en passant par la batterie de cuisine.

The Château, in the heart of Camargue, takes its name from one of the estate's owners: François Joseph d'Avignon d'Arlatan, who constructed the first building there in the 18th century. But its finest moment came at a time when the rich Marseille businessman Louis Noilly Prat bought it and turned it into a hunting lodge. However, the interest of this building lies mainly in the rather crazy dream that he achieved here. To make it more comfortable and provide the equipment needed for agricultural work, he installed everything the era had to offer in terms of up-to-date technology, including electric lighting, central heating, hot and cold running water and fully fitted bathrooms. It was the 1890s palace of modern conveniences. You will be able to see all this when you reach the château, together with works of art including paintings, ceramics and embroideries; everything is still in its place, from the linen to the chamber pot, via pots and pans.

Mitten in der Camargue gelegen hat das Schloss seinen Namen von einem der Eigentümer des Landguts: François Joseph d'Avignon d'Arlatan, der hier im 18. Jhd. das erste Gebäude errichtete. Die ruhmreiche Zeit ist aber die Epoche, als der reiche Marseiller Kaufmann Louis Noilly Prat es kauft und zum Jagdschloss umbaut. Besonders interessant ist jedoch vor allem der etwas verrückte Traum, den er hier verwirklicht hat. Für seinen höchsten Komfort und für die landwirtschaftlichen Arbeiten hat er alles installiert, was damals zur Spitzentechnik gehörte: elektrische Beleuchtung, Zentralheizung, fließendes Wasser warm und kalt, voll eingerichtete Badezimmer usw. Ein Palast der Modernitäten der 1890er Jahre.
