According to oral tradition, in 1692, in the midst of a famine, Claude Alain, a poor tailor, saw the Virgin Mary appear to him, asking him to build a chapel in her honor. "In 1692, the country was in the grip of a famine. Claude Alain, a poor tailor from the village of Coatcoustronnec, now known as "le Guiaudet", was on his way to the mill with his last savings. Suddenly, the Virgin Mary appeared to him and said: "I want a chapel to be built in this place in my honor".
Claude Alain wasted no time in relaying Mary's message to the rector of Bothoa, Messire Grégoire Raoul. Twice he was rebuffed like a common lunatic, only to find the rector blind when he returned a third time. Recovering his sight at the site of the apparitions, the rector admitted his error. A statue of Our Lady was then found on the site by the fervent pilgrims who had flocked there, the buried remains of an ancient shrine. The pilgrimage was founded, and the first oratory housing the statue was built The bell tower houses a monumental 16-bell carillon, installed in 1925. The only one in operation to play typical Breton tunes, it resonates with hymns such as Me ho salud Marie and Itron Varia Geodet. One of the chapel?s most remarkable features is its statue of the reclining Virgin, a rare representation in Brittany. Installed in a gilded wooden niche in the main altarpiece, this nursing Virgin holds her child in a posture of tenderness and repose. There are only three other similar statues in the entire region. The remarkable double fountain was built in 1881. It was used by pregnant women for protection. A Way of the Cross leads to it. The chapel is opened by a parishioner every day.
