Description

Straits both separate and unite. They are borders, but also passages, and they spark curiosity about the other shore. The Strait of Gibraltar is a double mirror where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, and Andalusia and the Maghreb gaze at one another. Two great musical traditions have flourished there: flamenco in the north and what is known as “Arab-Andalusian” music in the south. The differences between these traditions remain, yet their kinship is striking. This concert is a series of melodic scenes, performed, sung, and danced according to traditional rules. The pieces are drawn from the deep or light flamenco repertoire (“jondo y chico”), from the Maghreb Arab-Andalusian style (“el’ala”), from the popular Maghreb styles%AB cha’abi %BB and %AB ‘a%EFta %BB, the Eastern %AB baladi and qoudoud %BB, and Moorish music. Influenced by the music of the north and south, this show brings together, through dance and song, the two shores of the strait.
