Description

Saint-Michel-en-Grève has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and a number of standing stones indicate an important social structure in the megalithic era. Although the Gallic period is less well documented, we do know that the Romans were present and active here. The arrival of the Bretons altered political, social and economic structures, but by the end of the Middle Ages, the region was fully integrated into ducal Brittany and began to benefit from significant development. The illustrated presentation will tell the story of this thousand-year-old region through its landscapes, archaeological sources, buildings, place names and archives, from its origins to the early 16th century. Lecture presented by Yves Coativy, Professor of Medieval History at the University of Brest, Director of the Centre de recherche bretonne et celtique, UR 4451 / UAR 3554 of the CNRS. His work focuses on late medieval Brittany, in particular on state-building and coinage.
