Description
There are a thousand ways of talking about equilibrium, but two ideas always come up: that of a state that doesn't move? and that of an "optimal" state. Sometimes the two coincide, sometimes not. Mathematicians have a whole vocabulary to designate these situations: stationary, stable, unstable, minimizing, statistical, attractor? Words that, beyond their technicality, have led to real scientific advances. Cédric Villani begins this exploration with a personal anecdote: as a teenager, he lived in a room that was so messy that his friends used to joke that an earthquake would tidy it up. A joke, to be sure, but one that unknowingly touched on a central idea of statistical physics: thermodynamic equilibrium, that state of maximum disorder theorized by Boltzmann in his description of gases. Throughout his career, Cédric Villani has studied this notion of equilibrium in a wide variety of fields: gases (with the work of Maxwell and Boltzmann), plasmas (with the equations of Vlasov and Landau), geometry and statistics. These equilibria, though highly specific, enable us to better understand physical and mathematical systems as a whole; whether realistic or purely theoretical, they have often played a central role in the advances of many disciplines: astronomy, biology, economics, artificial intelligence and many others. Here, we take a look back at these benchmarks, which help us to understand complex systems and sometimes reveal profound laws, or even a certain form of beauty in apparent disorder.
