La connaissance de Montmirail remonte aux Xe-XIe s. lorsque cette terre, possession de l’évêque de Chartres, est concédée à la famille Gouët afin de la défendre des incursions normandes. Les Gouet créent à l’endroit le plus stratégique un château à motte qui devient bientôt une petite cité fortifiée. Ainsi Mons Mirabilis, “le mont d’où l’on admire”, s’émancipe pour prendre la tête de la baronnie de Montmirail, l’une des cinq qui forment au XVIe s. l’entité indépendante du Perche Gouët, du nom des premiers seigneurs connus.
