Description

The next Fête de la science will be devoted to an age-old art form: the art of knotting. While the navy can claim to be the originator of almost 9/10ths of the knots known today, it is far from having a monopoly on them. In addition to the knot we all use on a daily basis, the yaw knot, its use is universal, with each profession or activity having its own knot. Alongside the artilleryman, the carpenter, the cartwright, the surgeon, the sailor, the butcher, the farmer… there are also the mountaineers, the divers, the speleologists, the parachutists, the navigators… Always practical, sometimes indispensable, often the guarantors of our safety, capable of fixing, tightening, packing, patching up, connecting, knotting, sometimes elegant or purely decorative, they are everywhere and bear witness to thousands of years of know-how and empirical practices.
The mere mention of their names is sometimes an invitation to travel (Algonquin knot, American paw, Flemish knot, English braid, Turkish cap, Chinese button), calls up a suggestive bestiary (dog's leg, cow's knot, ray's or wolf's mouth, lark's head, monkey's fist…), exploits a geometric vocabulary (the knot of a dog, the knot of a cow, the mouth of a ray or a wolf, the head of a lark, the fist of a monkey…).), exploits a geometric vocabulary (zigzag, oblique, square, circular, cubic, cylinder or cross knot…) or literally makes our hair stand on end (noose, scaffold knot, hangman's knot, strangler's knot and other thieves' knots)… But they don't all have a specific function. A prolonged stopover due to sudden flooding or a calm, for example, a few strands of reformed rope, a good dose of imagination and these are veritable works of art that are created by the nimble fingers of idle sailors. That's seamanship! As a direct link with its exhibition Gestes de Loire – Patrimoine culturel immatériel, the Musée de la Loire is inviting the Mariniers de Vitry to help you discover this centuries-old art. Join them for a day of hands-on practice in the difficult art of knot tying.
