Description

The mountain crowned by a forest that dominates the small village of Tincry is called "camp of the Romans". It is a protohistoric oppidum of roughly oval shape. The large enclosure, about 2 km long, encloses some 16 ha. The rampart that surrounds it has a base of 20 to 25 meters and now dominates from 3 to 5 m a ditch 12.5 m thick for a depth of more than 3m.
These fortifications would have been built around 625 B.C. knowing that there was a site of non-fortified Celtic settlement before.
The peaceful dismantling of these fortifications would have taken place between 450 and 400 BC. This place would have been the centre of the power of Hallstatt and the beginning of Latène, a princely site, given its position, its funerary (400 tombs in necropolises), economic (salt of Marsal), and commercial environment. These results are the fruits of ongoing archaeological research, which should be continued to provide more information on the habitat, its economy, and its relationship with the environment. A smaller circular enclosure, tangential to the interior of the first, is attributed to the Middle Ages.
