Description

Dating from 1841, the washhouse of Bure-les-Templiers is characterized by its austere interior due to the rectangular shape of the building and its simple and elementary appearance. The washhouse of Romprey was built in 1847 and is located at the entrance of the village coming from Grancey-le-Château. In 1996, the artist Liam Gillick initiated the work "Doors and Fountain Sounds".
He was initially interested in the two doors of the wash house, one opening onto the street and the other onto a garden. They are made of steel, with curved openings of natural inspiration. These irregular shapes of various sizes seem to be self-generating, dressed in blue Plexiglas at sunrise and yellow at sunset. These two colours were then used for the windows, unified on the basis of the metal frame of one
The washhouse thus indicates its topographical position in relation to the village's organisation In 2000, Gillick also proposed to play the live recorded sound of several fountains in the village, by activating different switches. He created an installation consisting of a panel with switches and loudspeakers located in the village washhouse, allowing visitors to hear the conversations and sounds of the water.
