Moulin à vent des Vergnes – Les Lèves-et-Thoumeyragues

Ce moulin comporte toujours sa toiture et ses ailes. Sa haute tour circulaire, bâtie avec soin, supporte le poids de la charpente et celui du mécanisme. Une porte donne accès au rez-de-chaussée qui est occupé par le logis du meunier. Jusqu'au début du XIXème siècle, l'activité meunière est importante dans la région. La production est destinée à approvisionner Bordeaux, ainsi que les colonies, aussi des moulins sont-ils fréquemment implantés à proximité des ports. Leurs toitures tournantes permettent d'orienter les ailes dans le vent. Cent cinquante moulins à vent sont recensés dans le Médoc à la fin du XIXème siècle.

The mill still has its roof and wings. Its high, carefully-built circular tower supports the weight of the framework and the mechanism. A door gives access to the first floor, which is occupied by the miller's dwelling. Until the early 19th century, milling was an important activity in the region. Production was destined to supply Bordeaux and the colonies, so mills were frequently built near ports. Their revolving roofs allow the wings to face the wind. By the end of the 19th century, 150 windmills had been built in the Médoc.
