Description

This ancient hydrothermal and climatic station of the Pyrenees was classified in 1914. The domain of the former "Bains de Ganties" is located at the intersection of the communes of Ganties and Couret. For a long time it was thought that there were two springs. In fact, the one of Couret comes out of an aquifer which flows into the aquifer of Ganties. The spring used to emerge at the bottom of a small lake, the "Lac de Bagnis". The waters were listed under the name "Eaux de Ganties". The village was also called "Ganties les Bains" for a while. They are sodium sulphate, bicarbonate and cold calcium waters. This water is weakly mineralized (0,45 %). Its unctuousness is due to the presence of colloidal silica (0.011%). The water flowing from the spring is rainwater that fell 5,900 years ago. The main virtues attributed to this spring water were skin care, diuretic and healing. In the 18th century, the curists bathed in the small lake "Bagnis" formed by the 2 springs
In the 1820s, a certain Chaton, a jeweller from Saint-Gaudens who had a house in Couret, injured his finger. He had recourse to the spring water of Bagnis whose healing virtues had been praised. He was quickly healed. He then decided to develop the spring and obtained a license in 1829. The first thermal establishment was then created
In 1861, the building fell into ruin. However, in 1891, it is rebuilt and fitted out. The thermal station knows its hours of glory between 1870 and 1914. Certain celebrity in the modern time come there in cure. The site has assets: rural situation, calm and social life (horse races which attracted the Toulouse society)
From 1901 the resort was run by the Trombe family who also owned a hotel and a boarding house
In 1913, the establishment presents a new and comfortable hotel. However, the decline begins, due to no public aid, and the preference of holidaymakers for the sea and the mountains. Moreover, the clientele was essentially colonial. However, the process of decolonization is in full swing at the time.
In 1958, the resort closed for good. In 1968, the Vittel company bought the spring from the Trombe family along with a municipal plot of land to set up a bottling plant. But there was never any exploitation. In 1993, the Société Commerciale du Bassin de Vichy (S.C.B.V.) whose head office is in Saint-Yorre bought the spring. Later on, it also considered setting up a bottling plant but ended up abandoning the project.
Today, the spring continues to flow. A fountain is available to the public who can freely access it to collect water.

Fu subito guarito.
