The centerpiece of the furnishings of the parish church of Saint Jean-Baptiste in Buhl, this pictorial masterpiece dates from the late 15th century. Attributed to the school of Martin Schongauer, the Altarpiece incorporates all the techniques of the early Renaissance: sketched perspectives, engraved golds, shimmering colors, deep drapery and applied brocades. Typically Rhenish in style, its dimensions are impressive: 1.97m high and 3.50m long for the central piece (in situ, its wingspan reaches 7m). Free guided tours on Sunday afternoons in July and August, from 2.30pm to 5pm.
