La Synagogue

Construite de 1839 à 1842 sur l’emplacement d’une ancienne ferme, la synagogue de Colmar est le siège du Consistoire israélite et du grand Rabbinat du Haut-Rhin. La présence de la communauté juive dans la ville est attestée depuis le XIIIe siècle. Expulsés au XVIe siècle, la communauté juive revint à Colmar au moment de la Révolution où elle dispose d’un oratoire aménagé dans l’ancien poêle des laboureurs pour pratiquer son culte. Elle dépose un dossier de construction dès 1814, tandis que le rabbinat est transféré de Wintzenheim à Colmar en 1823. La construction de l’édifice commence alors en 1839, dans le style antiquisant de la première moitié du XIXe siècle. La synagogue de Colmar fut l’objet d’une rénovation en 1885 et une annexe lui fut adjointe en 1936. Transformée en salle de vente puis en arsenal pendant l’occupation allemande, elle fut à nouveau restaurée après la guerre. Built from 1839 to 1842 on the site of an old farm, the synagogue of Colmar is the seat of the Israelite Consistory and the Chief Rabbinate of the Upper Rhine. The presence of the Jewish community in the city is attested since the 13th century. Expelled in the 16th century, the Jewish community returned to Colmar at the time of the Revolution where it has an oratory set up in the old ploughmen's stove to practice its cult.
