La Boucle est le cœur historique de Besançon, une boucle presque parfaite lovée dans un méandre du Doubs. Dominée par la majestueuse Citadelle Vauban, le cœur de ville est riche d’un patrimoine architectural d’exception, héritage de plus de 2000 ans d’histoire. C’est un concentré de bâtiments remarquables, de dizaines de statues, ponts, places et rues… Deuxième secteur sauvegardé de France par la superficie (238 hectares), c’est la totalité de son centre historique qui fait ainsi l’objet de mesures de protection. Cette place forte naturelle a témoigné tout au long de l’histoire de son exceptionnel caractère défensif. Les contraintes géographiques ont dicté les conditions d’implantation du cœur historique de la ville et le développement de son urbanisme à travers les siècles. C’est à l’intérieur de l’espace constitué de la Boucle et du quartier Battant, fortifié par des remparts successifs, que la cité se développe jusqu’au XIXe siècle. Besançon a été tout à la fois place forte militaire, centre politique et capitale religieuse. Les grandes périodes de son histoire ont façonné son paysage urbain, lui conférant toutes ses caractéristiques actuelles.

Dominated by the majestic Vauban Citadel, the heart of the city is rich in an exceptional architectural heritage, the legacy of over 2000 years of history. It is a concentration of remarkable buildings, dozens of statues, bridges, squares and streets… The second largest protected area in France (238 hectares), the whole of the historic centre has been protected. Throughout history, this natural stronghold has demonstrated its exceptional defensive character. Geographical constraints have dictated the conditions for the establishment of the historic heart of the town and the development of its urban planning over the centuries. It is within the space constituted by the Loop and the Battant district, fortified by successive ramparts, that the city developed until the 19th century. Besançon was at the same time a military stronghold, a political centre and a religious capital. The great periods of its history have shaped its urban landscape, giving it all its current characteristics.

Es ist ein Konzentrat aus bemerkenswerten Gebäuden, Dutzenden von Statuen, Brücken, Plätzen und Straßen… Mit einer Fläche von 238 Hektar ist die Altstadt der zweitgrößte geschützte Sektor Frankreichs. Jahrhundert innerhalb des durch aufeinanderfolgende Stadtmauern befestigten Bereichs, der aus der Schleife und dem Viertel Battant bestand. Besançon war eine militärische Festung, ein politisches Zentrum und eine religiöse Hauptstadt. Die großen Perioden seiner Geschichte haben die Stadtlandschaft geprägt und ihr alle ihre heutigen Merkmale verliehen.

Het hart van de stad, gedomineerd door de majestueuze Citadel van Vauban, is rijk aan een uitzonderlijk architecturaal erfgoed, de erfenis van meer dan 2000 jaar geschiedenis. Het is een concentratie van opmerkelijke gebouwen, tientallen standbeelden, bruggen, pleinen en straten… Het op één na grootste beschermde gebied in Frankrijk (238 hectare), het hele historische centrum is beschermd. Doorheen de geschiedenis heeft dit natuurlijke bolwerk zijn uitzonderlijk defensief karakter bewezen. Geografische beperkingen hebben de voorwaarden gedicteerd voor de vestiging van het historische hart van de stad en de ontwikkeling van haar stedenbouwkundige planning door de eeuwen heen. De stad ontwikkelde zich tot de 19e eeuw binnen het gebied van de Boucle en de wijk Battant, versterkt door opeenvolgende wallen. Besançon is tegelijkertijd een militair bolwerk, een politiek centrum en een religieuze hoofdstad geweest.
