Le site de Chantenay-Saint-Imbert remonte à la Préhistoire (traces d’occupations datant de l’âge de la pierre polie).Cette occupation humaine se poursuit dans le temps puisqu’on sait qu’à l’époque gallo-romaine Chantenay était développée : des monnaies de Chantenay couvrant les règnes de Trajan (98-117) et de Postumus (258-297) sont conservées au musée municipal de Nevers, et de nombreux vestiges gallo-romains sont encore présents dans le site. Plusieurs chercheurs émettent l’hypothèse que Chantenay pourrait être la fameuse Gorgobina Boiorum citée par César dans la Guerre des Gaules.Site clunisien inauguré le 16 avril 2004, cette église date de la Fin du XIe – début du XXe siècle (fin des dernières reconstructions). Le Prieuré Saint-Martin, possession clunisienne de Souvigny, De son histoire parcellaire et encore trop peu connue, il nous reste aujourd’hui une église au chevet roman originel.
