Église romane Saint-Hilaire – Saint-Hilaire-les-Places

L'église romane de Saint-Hilaire est un édifice des XIe et XIIe siècles en forme de croix latine. Elle est la seule église romane rurale à coupole du département. Le chœur vouté en berceau est richement décoré de fresques datant pour les plus anciennes de la fin du XIe siècle. Désacralisée en 1936 puis laissée à l'abandon jusque dans les années 1980, elle fut l'objet d'une restauration importante grâce au mécénat qui lui vaudra d'être inscrite à l'inventaire des Monuments Historiques en 1973. Ses huit baies ont été dotées de vitraux contemporains réalisés par l'artiste peintre et émailleuse locale, Léa Sham's. Afin de continuer à financer les travaux de restauration de cet édifice remarquable, des concerts et expositions sont régulièrement organisés par l'association Patrimoines et Cultures qui fait aujourd'hui largement vivre ce lieu majestueux.

The Romanesque church of Saint-Hilaire was built in the 11th and 12th centuries in the shape of a Latin cross. It is the only domed rural Romanesque church in the département. The barrel-vaulted choir is richly decorated with frescoes, the oldest dating from the late 11th century. Desecrated in 1936 and abandoned until the 1980s, it underwent a major restoration thanks to patronage, and was listed as a Monument Historique in 1973. Its eight bays have been fitted with contemporary stained-glass windows by local painter and enameller Léa Sham's. To continue financing the restoration of this remarkable edifice, concerts and exhibitions are regularly organized by the Patrimoines et Cultures association, which now brings this majestic site to life.
