Désespéré par la disparition de son fils Clindor, dix ans plus tôt, Pridamant vient consulter le magicien Alcandre afin qu’il lui révèle le destin de son héritier, maltraité et fugueur. Alcandre propose à Pridamant de lui montrer, sous la forme de figures animées, la vie de son fils depuis son départ du domicile paternel. Après quelques mois d’errance, celui-ci se retrouve au service de Matamore, bouffon et amoureux d’Isabelle. Profitant de son statut d’intermédiaire, Clindor séduit Isabelle ainsi que sa suivante Lise. Intrigues, trahisons, fugues, bagarres, prison, exil : le scénario de cet « étrange monstre » aboutit dans le sang, la crise conjugale, la tragédie et le dévoilement de l’illusion. In despair over the disappearance of his son Clindor ten years earlier, Pridamant comes to consult the magician Alcandre, asking him to reveal the fate of his abused runaway heir. Alcandre offers to show Pridamant, in the form of animated figures, the life of his son since he left his father?s home. After a few months of wandering, Pridamant finds himself in the service of Matamore, the jester in love with Isabelle. Taking advantage of his position as intermediary, Clindor seduces Isabelle as well as her next-in-line Lise. Intrigues, betrayals, runaways, fights, prison, exile: the scenario of this "strange monster" culminates in bloodshed, marital crisis, tragedy and the unveiling of illusion. Clindor, Isabelle, Lise and their companions were in fact just actors and actresses. The illusion was perfect. Pridamant got caught. And so did we.

In seiner Verzweiflung über das Verschwinden seines Sohnes Clindor vor zehn Jahren sucht Pridamant den Zauberer Alcander auf, damit dieser ihm das Schicksal seines misshandelten und weggelaufenen Erben offenbart. Alcander bietet Pridamant an, ihm in Form von animierten Figuren das Leben seines Sohnes seit dessen Auszug aus dem Elternhaus zu zeigen. Nach einigen Monaten des Umherirrens findet er sich in den Diensten des Narren Matamore wieder, der in Isabelle verliebt ist. Clindor nutzt seine Stellung als Mittelsmann aus und verführt Isabelle und die ihr folgende Lise. Intrigen, Verrat, Flucht, Schlägereien, Gefängnis, Exil: Die Handlung dieses "seltsamen Monsters" endet in Blut, Ehekrise, Tragödie und Entlarvung der Illusion.
