Description

Born in New York to Haitian immigrant and activist parents, McCalla draws her inspiration from past and present. Her music vibrates with three centuries of history and influences from all over the world. A cellist, tenor banjoist and brilliant guitarist, she sings in several languages and has developed a songwriting voice that reflects the diversity of her origins. In addition to her solo work, McCalla is a founding member of Our Native Daughters, with Rhiannon Giddens, Amythyst Kiah and Allison Russell, and was a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, whose album "Leaving Eden" won a Grammy. McCalla's latest album, "Sun Without the Heat", is both playful and joyful, while mixing pain and tension. Throughout the album?s ten tracks, she plays with melodies and rhythms inspired by various forms of Afro-diasporic music, including Afrobeat, Ethiopian music, Brazilian tropicalism, American folk music and blues. Her lyrics are inspired by black feminist Afrofuturist thinkers such as Octavia Butler, Alexis Pauline Gumbs and Adrienne Maree Brown. Like these authors, McCalla sees writing as a means of finding hope and faith, inspiring collective reflection and evoking personal transformation. "Writing is a method of telling the stories that need to be told," she explains. "These stories are sometimes painful to tell. We all long for the warmth of the sun, but not everyone wants to feel it; yet it's essential to have both."
