ARTISTES INVITEES

The charango is a plucked string instrument that originated among the indigenous peoples of the Potosí mountains in Bolivia. Inspired by ancient guitars (such as the vihuela) brought over by Spanish colonists in the 16th century, it has become emblematic of Andean folk music. Small in size but big in richness, the charango offers an astonishing variety of registers, blending harmonies and arpeggios from a cultural mix of Quechua, Aymara and European traditions. Today, millions of charanguists play traditional, baroque, classical and contemporary repertoires. Recognised as a National Heritage site in Bolivia, charangu is played by all generations, in town and country, and across all social classes. Bolivia is the only country with hundreds of different tunings and thousands of specialist luthiers. Our aim is to highlight the great originality and musical diversity of the charango throughout the world. *** ORIGINS OF THE CHARANGO FESTIVALS
The very first festival dedicated to the charango was held in Bolivia in the early 1980s, to affirm its status as a national heritage. Since then, several countries have launched their own festivals. Our association El Molino Del Rio Cultural was lucky enough to be invited to the International Charango Festival in Cusco (Peru) in August 2022 – an experience that inspired the creation of this First Festival in France. "Mujeres Charanguistas": a theme unique in the world
Traditionally played by men, the charango began to open up to women in the 1960s. Even today, it is rare for women to perform on stage. This first festival aims to show that it is possible for women to play and perform. GUEST ARTISTS
