Herbier photographique, an exhibition by Carole Renard Sentiers botaniques de Lorraine : Herbier photographique was conceived as an echo of the region, bringing together in diptychs herbarium plates from the 19th and 20th centuries and contemporary creations. Drawn from collections held at the Botanical Garden, notably those of Dominique-Alexandre Godron, Victor Desnos and Roger Balay, these plates interact with the present-day landscapes in which they were once collected. Based on these scientific documents, Carole Renard sets off into the field. Guided by the places mentioned on the plates, she walks and searches for plants in the urban and rural spaces of Nancy and the surrounding area. The species found are then photographed or cyanotyped, two ancient processes based on the direct action of light. Presented outdoors, the diptychs bring scientific documents face to face with contemporary visual interpretations. By finding the exact species described by botanists, the artist inscribes his work in a dialogue between artistic creation and scientific knowledge, within a landscape transformed by time.
