Description
English
Its name derives not from its cross shape, but from the fact that it belonged to Redon Abbey during the Middle Ages. Occupied for thousands of years, as evidenced by its megaliths, Ile aux Moines has long been divided between farming and fishing. Small fishermen's cottages and large "maîtres de barques" (boat masters) houses line the few roads leading from the port, up to the village and out to the four cardinal points. The south-facing Grande Plage can be reached from the port by crossing the Lério isthmus, or by rounding the headland via the Bois d'Amour, surely the most romantic spot in the Gulf.
