Description

### Guided tour of Hotêl Scrive** by staff from the Direction régionale des affaires culturelles (DRAC) Hauts-de-France. The 1743 plan-relief shows a complex of three buildings opening onto rue du Lombard around a courtyard: to the right are the stables, opposite the main building and a wing at the far end of the courtyard. This is the first hôtel Libert de Quartes (1710-1720). The acquisition of neighboring plots by his eldest son Julien-François secured the land for the construction of a new hotel in 1773, designed to accommodate a large family. The entrance on rue du Lombard was moved to the axis of the courtyard, with a portal surmounted by 3 lions. Two wings face each other on either side of a large courtyard, the back wall punctuated with columns to give the illusion of an opening onto a garden. The residential wing on the left consists of a long building with a slightly projecting forebuilding. The whole is topped with Mansard roofs pierced by dormer windows. In 1785, adjoining properties were purchased. In 1821, the Granville heirs sold the property to brothers Désiré and Antoine Scrive. These manufacturers of carding machines (used for combing linen) occupied the hotel and set up their factory. Inside, a sumptuous salon (Salon de Flore – 1853) for entertaining distinguished guests demonstrated the family?s opulence.
The factory was enlarged on rue du Lombard, and on the courtyard side, large skylights illuminated the attic floor. When Antoine Scrive died in 1864, the Scrive company was liquidated. The hotel was divided into apartments served by large entrance halls. The centenary of the Scrive family's occupation was the occasion for transformations and decoration work. The "Malmaison" library and Art Deco bathrooms date from the 1930s.
Over the past 35 years, new departments have gradually been added to the building, in line with the expansion of the DRAC?s remit, while restoration and refurbishment work has continued unabated. The current premises house the various departments of the Ministry of Culture. Renovation work on the old factory building adjoining the historic building (18th century) has optimized service operations.
