Etang de Chèvres – Vandenesse

Situé en zone Natura 2000, cet étang de 22 hectares abrite une vie très animée avec la présence de nombreux animaux, insectes aquatiques, grenouilles vertes, oiseaux migrateurs et un paysage végétal remarquable ouvrant sur les monts du Morvan. Au début du 19e, le hameau de Chèvres comptait un haut-fourneau destiné à la fabrication de la fonte. Il n’était utilisé que deux à trois mois par an, l’eau de l’étang n’étant pas assez abondante toute l’année. Le bâtiment aux nombreuses cheminées servait de logements pour les ouvriers de l’usine. Le nombre de cheminées indique combien il y avait d’appartements à l’époque du haut-fourneau. Durant la période de l’entre-deux-guerres, l’activité des loisirs se développe. Les grandes étendues d’herbes derrière l’actuelle ferme, à gauche en face de l’étang, ont accueilli un golf, fréquenté par les curistes de Saint-Honoré-les-Bains.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the hamlet of Chèvres had a blast furnace for the production of cast iron.
