Description
In Saint-Omer, hidden in the heart of the Town Hall, is a small theatre of forgotten splendour, with little known gilding. Built by the architect Pierre Bernard Lefranc, its characteristics are those of the theatre that appeared in Venice in the 17th century: the parterre was reserved for the popular public and the boxes for the wealthy classes; the stage with its sloping floor, the sets, both fixed and mobile, and the machinery, invisible to the spectators, follow the ideas of the Italian Nicolas Sabbatini. The difference is that in France, and in particular in our theatre in Audomar, each box is set back from the lower box, creating a harmonious whole that highlights the richly decorated ceiling adorned with a large tassel chandelier that is hidden there during the performances. The colours, sculptures and trompe l'oeil paintings contribute to the enchantment of the whole. If your steps take you to places that are inaccessible to the ordinary spectator, you will be able to admire the stage cage where the machinery is located. What you won't see are the earthen vessels embedded in the walls, which, along with the wooden framework, provide excellent acoustics. Their use goes back to the ancient theatre; they were also used in the Middle Ages to improve sound transmission in certain churches. When the theatre was inaugurated on 18 October 1840, an opera, "Le domino noir", and a vaudeville, "Aîné et cadette", were performed, quickly followed by numerous plays. The contemporary spectator, unless he travels back in time, cannot come and sit in an armchair and applaud the bowing actors, as the theatre has been closed to the public for security reasons since 1973. But a trip into the future would allow it and with a little patience we too can enjoy theatrical performances in this exceptional setting. Italian Theatre. Saint-Omer. 2018 You arrive strolling on the Place Foch, accompanied by friends as impatient as you are to attend the very first performance of the century in our theatre. You climb the steps and arrive in a place that is open and dedicated to culture. You are a little early and decide to visit the theatre shop before grabbing a refreshment or a snack in the catering area on the ground floor. You meet the manager, who greets you with a smile and takes the time to explain the cultural policy of the place and the year's programme: you already knew that you could see your nephew perform at his school's end of year show and your sister who is part of a local troupe, you learn that you will be able to see regional and even national plays during the winter season, which will be predominantly musical: lyrical works, chamber music.. The summer season will focus on the original door of the theatre giving access to the dressing rooms. Detail of the trompe l'oeil decoration of the ceiling. In the medallion, one of the allegorical figures can be seen: Poetry and its phylactery. The other three are: Music and its lyre, Theatre and its mask and Dance and its tambourine. Pause in the silent theatre where, by closing your eyes, you can imagine that the performance is about to begin. The summer season will focus on tourism and heritage, while the spring and early autumn season will be reserved for amateurs and associations. The programming takes into account the constraints linked to the particularities of the place: the stage is shallow and not very open, the capacity of the public is limited (about 350 seats) and there is no orchestra pit, but on the other hand, the proximity between the public and the artists is interesting and creates an emotional atmosphere. The project manager also explains the configuration of this place whose function is now essentially theatrical (reception of the public, artists, logistics): on the ground floor, shop and catering area, on the first floor, theatre, wedding room and gallery of paintings, which will sometimes be diverted from their functions to accommodate rehearsals or exhibitions and important events, the mayor's official office The second and third floors house the technical and administrative areas. In the dome, a rehearsal room is available for artists. But now it's time to take your place in the box you have reserved. We leave you to your dream… a dream which should become reality in the years to come because the municipality of Saint-Omer works actively to realize it.

I colori, le sculture e i dipinti trompe l'oeil contribuiscono all'incanto dell'insieme.
