Site Gallo-Romain de Sanxay – Sanxay

À quelques 30 km au sud-ouest de Poitiers, le site gallo-romain de Sanxay est un site archéologique majeur de l’antique province d'Aquitaine. Nichée dans un méandre de la Vonne, cette petite ville gallo-romaine a été occupée du Ier au IVème siècles. 1500 ans après son abandon, le site renaît au travers des fouilles conduites par le Père Camille de La Croix. Trois principaux monuments publics dans un excellent état de conservation sont intégralement accessibles au public : un théâtre dont la capacité d'accueil est estimée à environ 6500 spectateurs, un complexe thermal dont les murs et certains bassins chauffés conservent des élévations supérieures à 3m, et un sanctuaire de 6000m² composé d’un temple octogonal à galerie périphérique cruciforme ceinturé par d'imposants portiques. Some 30 km southwest of Poitiers, the Gallo-Roman site of Sanxay is a major archaeological site of the ancient province of Aquitaine. Nestled in a meander of the river Vonne, this small Gallo-Roman town was occupied from the 1st to the 4th centuries. 1500 years after its abandonment, the site was reborn through the excavations led by Father Camille de La Croix. Three main public monuments in an excellent state of preservation are fully accessible to the public: a theater with an estimated capacity of about 6500 spectators, a thermal complex whose walls and some heated pools still have elevations higher than 3m, and a 6000m² sanctuary composed of an octagonal temple with a cruciform peripheral gallery surrounded by imposing porticoes.
