Place du Forum – Arles

De tous temps, au coeur de la cité, cette place a symbolisé la rencontre et l'échange. Dès l'Antiquité, place annexe du forum principal (fin du Ier siècle av. J.-C.), pôle économique et politique de l'administration romaine, elle deviendra au Moyen Âge bourse incontournable des transactions commerciales. On la connaît aujourd'hui pour être parmi les lieux les plus "mondains" de la ville. Arlésiens et touristes s'y côtoient sous le patronage de nombreuses célébrités, dont Vincent Van Gogh ou Frédéric Mistral. Place du Forum, Vincent Van Gogh, peintre solitaire commence ou achève son périple au milieu des habitués de la nuit. Un soir de septembre (1888) il y pose son chevalet.. C'est beau une ville la nuit. Celle d'Arles séduit Vincent Van-Gogh comme l'ont déjà séduit la fureur des couleurs de la campagne au printemps (" cette mer jaune ")et le ciel profond du jour. Il loge place Lamartine, mais se déplace partout dans la ville durant son court séjour. La vie du soir se passe dans les cafés et cabarets où il rencontre les quelques connaissances dont il nous a laissé le souvenir.

This Place, in the heart of town, has always symbolised meetings and exchanges. In Antiquity the square was next to the main forum (late 1st century BC), and the economic and political centre of the Roman administration; in the Middle Ages it became the main centre for commercial transactions. It is now known as one of the most social areas in town. Locals and tourists rub shoulders under the patronage of a number of well-known figures such as Vincent Van Gogh and Frédéric Mistral. On the Place du Forum, the solitary painter Vincent Van Gogh began or completed his journey amidst the night-owls. He put his easel down there one evening in 1888. Towns can be beautiful at night. Vincent Van Gogh found Arles beautiful, as he did the intense colours of the countryside in spring ('this yellow sea') and the deep sky during the day. He stayed on Place Lamartine, but travelled throughout the town during his short stay. The night-life took place in the cafes and cabarets, where he met the few acquaintances we know about.

Zu allen Zeiten war dieser Platz mitten in der Stadt ein Symbol für Begegnung und Austausch. Seit dem Altertum war er ein Nebenplatz des Hauptforums (Ende 1. Jhd. v. Chr.), das wirtschaftliche und politische Zentrum der römischen Verwaltung. Im Mittelalter wird er die berühmte Börse für Transaktionen. Heute ist sie bekannt, weil sie zu den "mondänsten" Orten der Stadt gehört. Bewohner von Arles und Touristen begegnen sich hier unter der Schirmherrschaft zahlreicher Berühmtheiten, darunter Vincent Van Gogh oder Frédéric Mistral. Auf der "Place du Forum" beginnt oder beendet der einsame Maler Vincent Van Gogh seine Reise inmitten der nächtlichen Stammgäste. An einem Septemberabend (1888) stellt er dort seine Staffelei auf… Eine nächtliche Stadt ist schön. Das abendliche Arles hat Vincent Van-Gogh, genauso verführt wie zuvor der Farbenrausch der Landschaft im Frühling ("dieses gelbe Meer") und der tiefblaue Tageshimmel. Er wohnt an der Place Lamartine, begibt sich aber während seines kurzen Aufenthalts in alle Teile der Stadt. Das abendliche Leben spielt sich in den Cafés und Schänken ab, wo er die wenigen Bekannten trifft, an die er uns Erinnerungen hinterlassen hat.

Dit plein in het hart van de stad heeft altijd symbool gestaan voor ontmoetingen en uitwisselingen. Al in de oudheid was het een aanvulling op het hoofdforum (eind 1e eeuw v.Chr.), een economisch en politiek centrum voor het Romeinse bestuur en in de middeleeuwen werd het een belangrijke marktplaats voor handelstransacties. Vandaag de dag staat het bekend als een van de meest "sociale" plekken van de stad. Inwoners van Arles en toeristen komen hier samen onder het beschermheerschap van vele beroemdheden, waaronder Vincent Van Gogh en Frédéric Mistral. Op de Place du Forum begon of eindigde Vincent Van Gogh, de eenzame schilder, zijn reis tussen de stamgasten van de nacht. Op een avond in september (1888) zette hij er zijn schildersezel neer… Steden zijn mooi 's nachts. Arles verleidde Vincent Van-Gogh op dezelfde manier als hij was verleid door de kleurenpracht van het lentelandschap ("deze gele zee") en de diepe lucht overdag. Hij verbleef op de Place Lamartine, maar trok door de stad tijdens zijn korte verblijf. S Avonds bracht hij door in cafés en cabarets, waar hij de weinige kennissen ontmoette die hij achterliet.

En todo momento, en el centro de la ciudad, esta plaza ha simbolizado los encuentros y los intercambios. Desde la Antigüedad, plaza anexa al foro principal (finales del siglo I a.C.), polo económico y político de la administración romana, se convertirá en la Edad Media en bolsa ineludible de las transacciones comerciales. Se la conoce en la actualidad por ser uno de los lugares más "mundanos" de la ciudad. Arlesianos y turistas acuden allí patrocinados por numerosas celebridades, entre las cuales se encuentran Vincent Van Gogh o Frédéric Mistral. Es hermosa una ciudad por la noche. La de Arles sedujo a Vincent Van-Gogh como ya le había seducido el furor de sus colores del campo en primavera ("este mar amarillo") y el profundo cielo del día. Se aloja en place Lamartine, pero se desplaza por todas partes en la ciudad durante su corta estancia. La vida nocturna se la pasa en los cafés y en los cabarets donde conoce algunos de los conocidos que retrató.

Oggi, la si conosce per essere tra i luoghi più "mondani" della città. Arlesiani e turisti si trovano fianco a fianco sotto il patrocinio di numerose celebrità, tra cui Vincent Van Gogh o Frédéric Mistral. Alloggia in Place Lamartine, ma si sposta ovunque in città durante il suo breve soggiorno. La vita della sera trascorre nei caffè e cabaret, dove incontra le poche conoscenze di cui ci ha lasciato il ricordo.
