Françoise d’Aubigné est née en 1635, dans un logement de l’ancienne prison de Niort où son père endetté était enfermé en tant qu’assassin, traître et faux-monnayeur. Elle vit son enfance de pauvreté chez sa tante protestante de Mursay, proche de Niort, où a vécu son grand-père, écuyer du futur Henri IV et grand poète de la période baroque. Suite à son séjour aux Antilles, elle est appelée la "Belle Indienne". Son éducation religieuse est confiée aux Ursulines de Niort, puis à celles de Paris. Afin d’échapper au couvent, elle est mariée au "vieux" poète Paul Scarron, puis, à sa mort, devient la gouvernante des "bâtards" de Louis XIV. Le roi lui offre le marquisat de Maintenon et l’épouse nuitamment en 1683. Elle fonde l’institution de Saint-Cyr instruisant les jeunes filles pauvres de la noblesse de province et, à ce titre, est surnommée "la première institutrice de France".

Françoise d'Aubigné was born in 1635 in a dwelling in the former prison of Niort where her indebted father was locked up as a murderer, traitor and counterfeiter.
