Description
Au VIIe siècle, la femme de Gengoult étant accusée d’avoir pêché avec un clerc, son mari la force à plonger son bras dans une source qu’il aurait fait jaillir de terre. Le bras ressort couvert de pustules et brûlé, preuve de l’infidélité de la femme. L’amant aurait alors tué le saint. Gengoult, patron des chasseurs, est également celui des maris trompés.
La statue qui surmonte la fontaine se trouve dans le jardin du presbytère jusqu’en 1906. Le captage de la source est ancien, puis que vers 1630, elle alimente le parc des seigneurs de Longeaux. Au XVIIIe siècle, l’eau est utilisée pour soigner les troubles oculaires car elle contient du bore, oligo-élément utilisé dans la confection des collyres.
La fontaine est transformée en lavoir au début du XXe siècle.

In the 7th century, Gengoult?s wife was accused of having sinned with a cleric, so her husband forced her to plunge her arm into a spring that he had made gush up from the ground.
