Description

Records of the church date back to 1165, when it was part of the possessions of the Abbey of Sainte-Croix in Bordeaux. At that time, it comprised a simple nave and a west façade opened by the present-day Romanesque doorway. The church was known under the names of Saint Cyr and Saint Julitte (written Julith in the texts), then Saint Ciers, and is now dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Historians[2],[3] believe the church may have been built in the early 14th century, although the early part is Romanesque in style. The original plan of the church was rectangular, with a straight chevet to the east, and the door opening into the bell tower to the west. Following the addition of two chapels built in 1651 and 1655, the church took on the shape of a Latin cross. The 17th century saw the addition of a sacristy against the chevet and a porch in front of the west door.
