Cairn de Gavrinis – Larmor-Baden

A masterpiece of Neolithic art on an island in the Gulf of Morbihan. The Gavrinis monument is a dolmen under a cairn (i.e. covered with dry stones) similar to others in the region, but built around 3500 BC. What makes it so special, however, are the magnificent engravings that adorn almost all the slabs in the chamber's corridor. Still difficult to interpret, the symbols depicted are typical of Neolithic art: axes, sticks, divinities… A very important archaeological find. Explored several times between the 18th and 19th centuries, the monument was excavated and restored between 1978 and 1984.

Ein Meisterwerk der neolithischen Kunst auf einer Insel im Golf von Morbihan. Das Denkmal von Gavrinis ist ein Dolmen unter Cairn (d. h. mit trockenen Steinen bedeckt), der anderen in der Region ähnelt, aber um 3500 v. Chr. erbaut wurde. Was ihn jedoch so besonders macht, sind die wunderschönen Gravuren, die fast alle Platten des Gangs zur Kammer schmücken. Die dargestellten Symbole sind noch schwer zu interpretieren und typisch für die neolithische Kunst: Äxte, Stäbe, Gottheiten… Das Monument wurde zwischen dem 18. und 19. Jahrhundert mehrmals erforscht und von 1978 bis 1984 ausgegraben und restauriert.
