Description

Bourmont, an ancient fortified medieval Lorraine town, is built on the summit and slopes of a rocky cuesta overlooking the upper Meuse valley, which was the border between the Kingdom of France and Lorraine until the latter?s annexation in the second half of the 18th century. The town?s rich history, linked to its strategic position and its ties with the nearby fortress of La Mothe, is reflected in its very morphology. The urban landscape, on a site remarkably well-suited to fortification, features architecture that has little in common with that of a village, dominated by the steeples of its two churches and a very present plant environment. The town has been preserved as a whole thanks to the few transformations it has undergone, culminating in the 18th century, when, after the destruction of La Mothe, all the administrative functions that had been concentrated there for a century returned. The town?s rugged topography, accentuated by the defensive works carried out in the area, has given rise to a particular type of occupation and architecture, with streets laid out according to the geography and the layout of the ramparts and ditches, terraced gardens and steep rock faces.
There are three main neighborhoods, both in time and space: -on the highest level, the former castral town, with its collegiate church, and houses originally intended for the notables and numerous officers and clerics whose role as chief town of the Bassigny baillage implied, occupying, with gardens, large plots of land -to the east, a more rural suburb of small houses, grouped around the former Notre-Dame church and its parish cemetery (the original Romanesque church was replaced in the 19th century by the present-day Saint-Joseph church, and the cemetery was moved) -on the western slope of the cuesta, the long, straight rue du Faubourg de France, created in the early 18th century to join the bridge built at the same time over the Meuse.
The old town, below the castle of which no trace remains, was fortified by a rampart flanked by a dozen large semicircular towers, seven of which are still visible, notably from the rue des Anciens Fossés. Ditches enhanced its effectiveness. This enclosure, like the château, was destroyed in the 17th century.

I fossati ne aumentavano l'efficacia.
