Fantasio est cynique, blasé, révolté. Il s’ennuie, malgré sa jeunesse. Ce que Fantasio cherche au plus profond de lui, c’est une grande pensée, une grande action à accomplir. Celle-ci se présente à lui le jour où l’on prépare le mariage – forcé – de la princesse Elsbeth avec le fat et ridicule prince de Mantoue. Fantasio prend alors la place du fou de la Cour qui vient de mourir, et sous ce déguisement, tente de convaincre l’héritière du trône d’obéir à son cœur plutôt qu’à la raison d’État. Écrite pour être lue et faire « théâtre dans un fauteuil », cette comédie pleine de fougue, d’élan et de romantisme révèle un auteur de génie et des héros d’une modernité touchante, désarmante… percutante !

Fantasio is cynical, jaded and rebellious. He's bored, despite his youth. What Fantasio is looking for deep down is a great thought, a great deed to accomplish. This comes to him on the day Princess Elsbeth is to be forced into marriage with the fat, ridiculous Prince of Mantua. Fantasio takes the place of the Court fool who has just died, and under this disguise, tries to convince the heiress to the throne to obey her heart rather than the reason of State. Written to be read as "theater in an armchair", this spirited, impetuous and romantic comedy reveals a genius of a playwright and heroes of a touching, disarming and striking modernity!

Fantasio ist zynisch, blasiert und rebellisch. Er langweilt sich trotz seiner Jugend. Fantasio sucht in seinem Innersten nach einem großen Gedanken, einer großen Tat, die er vollbringen muss. Diese findet er an dem Tag, an dem die Zwangsheirat von Prinzessin Elsbeth mit dem fatalen und lächerlichen Prinzen von Mantua vorbereitet wird. Fantasio schlüpft in die Rolle des verstorbenen Hofnarren und versucht in dieser Verkleidung, die Thronfolgerin davon zu überzeugen, ihrem Herzen statt der Staatsräson zu gehorchen. Diese feurige, schwungvolle und romantische Komödie wurde geschrieben, um gelesen zu werden und "Theater im Sessel" zu machen. Sie offenbart einen genialen Autor und Helden von rührender Modernität, die entwaffnend sind… durchschlagend!
